Welcome to the home of Swim Smooth in Manchester!

If improving your front crawl matters to you – you’re in the right place!

Whatever your reason for improving your front crawl, be it:

  • fitness
  • faster triathlons
  • personal challenge
  • enjoyment
  • an open water swim
  • a swim-run

Or perhaps you’ll come to us with another reason – we can help!

Powered by the world renowned Swim Smooth coaching system, we offer swim coaching for adults (18+) from those new to front crawl up to those swimming at an elite level.

We have a number of Swim Smooth options to help you with your front crawl:

Bringing a little bit of the Perth-magic to Manchester. These are our pool based swim squads. They have a front crawl and open water focus. Ideal for triathletes, fitness and open water swimmers.

We have a range of swimmers in the squad from those new to squad swimming up to elite swimmers. Minimum swimming standard is 400m comfortably on front crawl.

For more information and to join the squad click here

Open water squads – available between June and September

These are like our pool based squads – only with less chlorine and more wildlife!

We believe that that there is nothing quite like training for open water swimming than getting out there and doing it!

We’ve partnered with Helly Hansen Water Sports Centre at Salford Quays to deliver these sessions. They will cover fitness, and open water specific skills and techniques. Could this give you that extra competitive edge you’ve been looking for?

Swim Smooth 1-2-1 video analysis and stroke correction

Over the course of 75 minutes we’ll show you what you need to improve and how to do it. We’ll then get you back in the pool and go through it with you.

For a taster of the session please watch the video.

If you’re not quite up to 400m front crawl (yet), we can also help with our front crawl technique sessions.  These are small group sessions for adults who can already swim 50m (any stroke) up to those who are building up to 400m front crawl.

Do you feel like you’re swallowing water or worrying if you will every time you breathe? Does this feeling get worse in open water?

Learn to ‘trust your bow wave’. If your head is in the right place then it will create a bow wave (photo 2). See how the water level drops from around the head and along the side of the face? This creates a pocket of air for you to breathe into.

It seems like an instinct to want to lift, but if you do this you’ll break your bow wave (see the gap between the head and the water) and you’ll risk getting water in your mouth (you can see this in action in photo 1)

In choppy water this is even more important - keep the head in the bow wave and roll to breathe. The irony is that the instinct is to lift even more in this circumstance as we fight harder to avoid swallowing water, but lifting to breathe actually makes it more likely that this will happen as your head isn’t there to protect your mouth from the waves. On top of that you get a whole other host of other possible side effects too - you’ll fatigue quicker, your stroke becomes more inefficient, you become more panicky, you feel disorientated, you may feel nauseous, the negative-chatter in your mind increases and so the spiral continues.

It will take time and practice but for a more enjoyable and efficient swim, Learn to TRUST YOUR BOW WAVE!

Here’s more info about the Bow wave from the Swim Smooth blog, ‘Feel for the water’

It was so good to be back doing what I love this morning!

🐝 Great morning salfordwsc ! The atmosphere was buzzing 🐝😎 Coaches Lucy and Caz started beta-testing coaching with our swimsmooth Manchester squad swimmers to check how this ‘new normal’ is going to work.
We are working in accordance with government and rlssuk , swimengland, and brittri guidelines for group coaching to keep you, the team and our wider community safe.
We had good feedback from everyone: the team at HHWC, swimmers and coaches. Swimmers felt comfortable with social distancing measures at the centre and within the coached sessions.
Thank you to the team at HHWC for all their support with getting us back coaching and to this morning’s beta-testers.
Over the next week or so we hope to announce our OW coaching programme for the 2020 season. If you’re interested in joining us for our 2020 season, we’ll share details across our social media. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
