Happy 6th Anniversary!

Amy Uncategorized

We’re excited to announce that we’re celebrating our 6th anniversary!

Here are a few snap shots from how life was when we first started our lessons:

– Gordon Brown was Prime Minister
– a first class stamp cost 36p (now a shocking 60p)
– the view from the elite pool was that we’d just had the incredible 2008 Beijing Olympics where Rebecca Adlington won a historic 2 gold medals, Michael Phelps won his 8 gold medals and London 2012 was being set up as a disaster (fortunately the naysayers were to be proven wrong).
– Open water Swimming was just starting to take off in popularity with the Great Swim starting at Windermere in 2008. For something that is such a staple event on the Manchester open water calendar, it’s surprising to discover that it wasn’t until 2010 that it came to Salford!
– In the triathlon world – Alistair Brownlee won his first World Triathlon championship and Chrissie Wellington celebrated her third Ironman World Championship.

And if you’d like a more in-depth flash back to 2009 – here are the BBCs top news stories of 2009

A lot has happened in the last 6 years:

For starters, we’re all 189,302,400 seconds older than we were.

According to averages or guidelines we will have:

– Aimed to have drunk 4382 litres of liquid
– Slept for nearly 2 years
– Based on a traditional view of a working week (37.5 hour week with 5.6 weeks holiday a year), we have spent 1.8 years at work
consumed nearly 4.4 million calories (women) and nearly 5.5 million calories (men)
– and if we subscribe to recommended minimum amounts of exercise, spent 782.5 hours (or 32 days) exercising (which is surprisingly low in comparison to all the others)!

And here at Swimming Matters we have delivered nearly 4000 lessons and taught over 200 people!

We would like to thank staff at the Club for all their support over the years and to our swimmers we would like to say thank you for:

– trusting and allowing us to share their swimming journeys and goals with them
– learning along with us (we believe learning is a 2-way process and we learn something new from each of our swimmers)
– and perhaps most importantly making our sessions together enjoyable

It truly has been a privilege!

We’re looking forward to working with you in 2015!

Yours proudly,

The Swimming Matters Team
