Welcome to the home of Swim Smooth in Manchester!

If improving your front crawl matters to you – you’re in the right place!

Whatever your reason for improving your front crawl, be it:

  • fitness
  • faster triathlons
  • personal challenge
  • enjoyment
  • an open water swim
  • a swim-run

Or perhaps you’ll come to us with another reason – we can help!

Powered by the world renowned Swim Smooth coaching system, we offer swim coaching for adults (18+) from those new to front crawl up to those swimming at an elite level.

We have a number of Swim Smooth options to help you with your front crawl:

Bringing a little bit of the Perth-magic to Manchester. These are our pool based swim squads. They have a front crawl and open water focus. Ideal for triathletes, fitness and open water swimmers.

We have a range of swimmers in the squad from those new to squad swimming up to elite swimmers. Minimum swimming standard is 400m comfortably on front crawl.

For more information and to join the squad click here

Open water squads – available between June and September

These are like our pool based squads – only with less chlorine and more wildlife!

We believe that that there is nothing quite like training for open water swimming than getting out there and doing it!

We’ve partnered with Helly Hansen Water Sports Centre at Salford Quays to deliver these sessions. They will cover fitness, and open water specific skills and techniques. Could this give you that extra competitive edge you’ve been looking for?

Swim Smooth 1-2-1 video analysis and stroke correction

Over the course of 75 minutes we’ll show you what you need to improve and how to do it. We’ll then get you back in the pool and go through it with you.

For a taster of the session please watch the video.

If you’re not quite up to 400m front crawl (yet), we can also help with our front crawl technique sessions.  These are small group sessions for adults who can already swim 50m (any stroke) up to those who are building up to 400m front crawl.

It seems ironic that on the warmest March day in 53 years, our squad selfie theme was ‘rewarming’. With the start of the unusually early open water season this year, we had an open water technique session. As we said last year, it is everyone’s choice as to whether they swim at this time. We feel that swimmers need to be aware of the risks and educated about how to swim safely. The RLSS, Swim England and the BTF have produced guidance about how to keep each other safe. https://www.swimming.org/openwater/outdoor-swimming-safety-avoidable-tragedies/ We know people are keen to get back in, but the water is still cold, around 4-5 degrees cooler than the start of than the traditional open water season (which most people still describe as ‘freezing’). This is why it recommend for experienced cold water swimmers until it warms up a bit more. We recapped the cold water swimming advice that we had from our guests over the last year, Heather Massey and Ash Jones, along with how it fits into the new RLSS, SE and BTF guidance Congratulations to: Dan A-K for his 25th Hat Simon and Stephen for their 35th Hat We hope you have an egg-cellent Easter weekend!🐣 #openwaterswimming #staysafe #safetyiskey #knowyourlimits #respectyourlimits #triathlon #swimming #fitfam #manchester #salfordquays #mediacityuk #swimsmoothmanchester ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Last night was the first anniversary of the virtual squads. It’s a natural time for reflection as shown by similar social media posts undoubtedly dotted around your feeds. We seized the chance to look back at our virtual year to date. 380 days ago, Lucy had been on 2 zoom calls and had varying degrees of success with logging into a meeting, we’d not heard of virtual squads, and swim cords were something usually hidden in the pages of textbooks. Over the last year, the virtual squads, have become an integral part to our week. They have allowed us to have our swimming fix and the camaraderie that comes with swimming with a group of people, even if we are slightly drier than usual. Here are some of the stats from our virtual year: 👉🏻 We’ve had 43 virtual sessions 💥 851 total attendance 🏊🏾‍♂️ 52 swimmers 📸 42 squad selfie themes 🦸🏽‍♂️ We’ve had 25 squad guests including @swimscaper @mrstephenmilne @coach_ammunk @smilingtricoach @collswim @notanotheraveragejoe @peakandpond @chriscookmentor @bexrimmington @smiley8889 @susierodgersmbe @jo.calado @swimsmoothpaul @adsyoung2 @swimcathswim, Alec Johnson, Stu Moore, Ella Hughes, Vikki Hubbard, Steve Evans, Scott Milne, Darren Ward, Ash Jones and Heather Massey 🎩 We have 9 virtual squad hats. 🏆 3 swimmers (Mick, Nick and Roy) have attended EVERY week Thank you to everyone for making them into what they have become. It’s been such a privilege to be a part of🙏🏻 #1stanniversary #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #instatri #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester
Well... I’d planned a magical mystery session and it unexpectedly took me by surprise too! The evening's theme was 'Favourite colour'. Wear it or display it... I was being indecisive, so went rainbow instead! 🌈 Then the challenge was thrown down to put everyone’s favourite colours in rainbow order (the time on photoshop starts to mount up). 🥇 Then there was a further challenge to add Stephen's FINA World Champion medal to make the gold at the end of the rainbow... Then as I ended the session, I realised that we'd recorded the second part of the session in the cloud and not on my computer. This only seems to record speaker view, so I had no photo from this week... 🤦🏻‍♀‍ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 🧍🏽🧍🏿🧍🏻 so now the challenge became add to find everyone from previous squad sessions and somehow make a rainbow with the gold at the end of the rainbow... - - - We mixed up the order of the session again #expecttheunexpected We chatted to our resident Olympian Stephen Milne as he gears up for Olympic trials. As a member of the sporting elite, he's allowed to compete. We heard how his first competition was in this 'new normal'. Thank you for sharing Stephen, it was really interesting to hear. - - - The second part was some technique work. We built on the posture and technique work of last week and show cased some drills that allow us to explore the difference this makes. We went over: ▪️ kick on the side ▪️ 616 ▪️ 636 ▪️ Javelin Drill - - - Congratulations to: Scott M and Carolyn for their 40th hat Jo for her 35th hat 👏👏👏 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #rainbow #swimtechnique #swimspiration #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester #manchesteruk
Who can believe it? 40 virtual sessions and the one year anniversary of our last week of 'old normal' (if there's new normal, does that mean there was an old normal? 🤔). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This time last year, it was unbeknown to us, our last week of our squad sessions. We had a feeling it was coming, but I don't think I'd have imagined what was coming next! I don't think virtual squads were even an idea at this point last year, we were focussed on making the most of each and every pool session! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Last night's session was a real gem... We did our first virtual technique endurance session. Like our water based session, it was split into two parts a technique element - we went over the areas that needed tuning up from our inter-lane front crawl quiz. This involved a practical-squad-participation element to get you thinking about posture and how good posture connects into all areas of the stroke: ◾️body position and effects on streamlining ◾️ Arms, set up of the pull and therefore pull efficiency ◾️Kick and effects on streamlining Then the endurance part was the overview of training types we use during our sessions to help you make the most of your time in the water. We know that time is precious. ---- CONGRATULATIONS to Mick, Nick and Roy for their 40th HAT!! Absolutely incredible, they've not missed a session! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Close on their heels, we had Jean and Luke with their 35th Hat ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you to everyone for making it a great session! See you next week! 😁 #dryswimming #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #instaswim #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #instatri #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester #manchesteruk #swimtraining #triathlontraining #swimbikerun #trilife

What a way to celebrate Swim Smooth Manchester’s 4th Squad-iversary (and coincidentally Jo’s Birthday)! This week’s theme was ‘Celebrating in style’. We had special guest @swimcathswim aka the Merthyr Mermaid join us! She was the first woman to swim a zero Ice Mile inside of the Antarctic Polar Circle! If you’ve not seen Merthyr Mermaid – it’s a must-see - check it out on iplayer https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000qnb4 We heard about her swimming journey so far starting with an intro to open water courses in 2012, her English Channel solo, her infamous ‘ice palace’, Antarctica, through frustrations of lockdown and on to her aims including complete the Ice 7 (an ice mile on each of the continents including a zero ice mile, below 1 degree). It was absolutely fascinating! Thank you for joining us Cath! Cath is also part of the Swim Smooth family as she is a sponsored athlete for Swim Smooth Swindon and the Cotwolds with Head Coach, Jason Tait, also being the coach who took her for her intro to open water in 2012! We surprised Cath by having Jason join us on the call too! Who knows where those intro to open water sessions will take you… ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Congratulations to: Shelley for her 10th hat Lex for his 25th hat Judy for her 30th hat ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Thank you to everyone for making it a fantastic session and celebration of our squad’s 4th anniversary! SEE YOU NEXT WEEK FOR OUR 40TH VIRTUAL SQUAD SESSION!! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #icemile #winterswimming #merthyrmermaid #ice7 #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #instaswim #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester #manchesteruk
Thanks to @swimengland for this great summary of how we return to swimming and aquatic exercise Posted @withregram • @swimengland Here's a summary of what the Government's announcement means for aquatics... #roadmap #summary #swimming #diving #artisticswimming #waterpolo
We were freestylin’ it last night… (it’s been a while). Our technique Tuesdays continued. This week we turned our attention to our beloved front crawl. • We started with the squads reasons why • Using @getkahoot we had a little inter-lane competition on front crawl technique. Will Lane 3 stay at the top of the table? Will Lane 2 avenge lane 3 and pip them to the finish this time? Will Lane 1 be an outside burner and sneak the win? And the results? Individual: 1️⃣ Jo (lane 3) 2️⃣ Scott H (Lane 1) 3️⃣ Jude (lane 3) 4️⃣ Nick (lane 2) 5️⃣ Charm (lane 3and that’s with missing one question due to notifications getting in the way) Team: Scoring: Due to technical hitches for some team members part way through, we’ve averaged the points per number of swimmers in each lane 🥇 Lane 1 were an outside burner, everyone was concentrating on the race in the middle, had it on the finish with an average of 12878 🥈 Then only 8 points difference which is so close considering points start at 1000 per question … Lane 3 averaged 12780 🥉 Then close behind (about a half a body length?) Lane 2 with an average of 12132 Overall quiz table (it’s close): Lane 3 on 5 points Lane 1 on 4 points Lane 2 on 3 points (1st = 3 points, 2nd = 2 points and 3rd=1 point) Congratulations to: Chris C for his 20th hat (Impressive playing Kahoot whilst on the turbo) Simon and Stephen for theirs 30th hats Thank you to everyone for making it a good session. See you next week for our 4th squad anniversary session! 🥳 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #freestyleswimming #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #instaswim #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #instatri #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester #manchesteruk #swimtraining #triathlontraining
Well, that was flippin' brilliant! It seems that @nutella and maple topped the favourites table (as well as a lot of our pancakes)! Watching back part of the session, I couldn't help but smile - genuinely a fun, informative session! Ash joined us last night to complete his hat-trick of sessions. This was the final of his trilogy as a guest (he says he may return as a swimmer - watch this space). He recommended https://magicseaweed.com for weather and tide charts. He talked us through tides and how they relate to swimmers. Absolutely fascinating to see it in action. Again I learned so much Congratulations to: 🌈 Jude for her 10th hat 👉 Clare for her 30th hat 👉 Kevin for his 35th hat Thank you everyone, great session! 😁 #pancakeday #dryswimming #triathlon #openwaterswimming #swimming #fitness #fitfam #fitspo #instaswim #swimsmoothmanchester #swimsmooth #instatri #salfordquays #salford #mediacityuk #manchester #manchesteruk #swimtraining #triathlontraining #swimbikerun #trilife
